What is a Computer Virus & do I have one?

 

If you can answer YES to any of these questions, you may have a Computer Virus!!

 

  1. Is your computer running SLOW?

  2. Nothing responds when you click on an icon and/or your software doesn't work properly?

  3. The system reboots, freezes, or crashes for no reason?

A VIRUS is a Program that is loaded onto your computer without your knowledge and runs against your wishes!

 

Below you will find the most common Virus/Malware names and what they do.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

TROJAN 

 

A program designed to destroy and delete files. It can often go undetected by antivirus software.

WORM 

 

A program that replicates itself over a computer network and usually performs malicious actions, such as using up the computer's resources and possibly shutting the system down. 

MALWARE

 

Is short for malicious software, malware is designed specifically to damage or disrupt a system.

SPYWARE

 

Is software that SECRETLY gathers user information through the user's Internet connection without his or her knowledge, usually for advertising purposes. Once installed, the spyware monitors user activity on the Internet and transmits that information in the background to someone else. Spyware can also gather information about e-mail addresses and even passwords and credit card numbers.

SCAREWARE

 

Is a type of software that is designed specifically to try and trick (or scare) you into making a purchase using your credit card.

KEYLOGGER

 

Is a type of surveillance software that has the capability to record every keystroke you make on the computer and keeps a log file.  The log file created by the keylogger can then be sent to a specified receiver. Such as someone trying to steal your identity.
